Gangsters In Time [Part 1] Page 7
Adolf and Ernak sat side by side, slightly bent and leaning against a small rock. The chief, angrily reloading his gun with the last bullets he had, was cursing all living things, “Let's visit the fucking cowboys. Such jolly. Remind me next time you give ideas where to go, to write my testament, and then to kill myself several times before I agree.”
The German shouted even more furiously, “Do you blame me?!” he raised his eyebrows, questioning.
“No! I'm blaming your aunt, George!”
Both stood up with all their might and made a shot at the cowboy to the cart. Then they continued crouching beside the rock without stopping arguing.
The carriage door slowly opened, a shotgun came out and shot twice. After that, the coachman looked around, but no one was inside. Suddenly he heard a voice behind him, “Think fast!”
A dozen shots followed, and the stable boy looked like Corrado Cattani in the last episode of "La Piovra".
Galfonino emerged from the bushes. All the guards were dead, including the mayor. The four buddies gathered to the machine.
“And if that wasn’t like in the movies?” the Italian grinned.
“A rather scientific film of the Cold War...” crossed Leo.
“Pff, I'm too old for this shit,” added Hitler. “And I want to confess something. I'm not the real Adolf Hitler.”
The others looked at him like a flock of sheep on the highway.
“Exactly the reaction I expected,” grinned the deceiver. “I’m one of the many doubles of the Fuhrer.”
“We guessed!” they all answered at the same time.
“And we gotta admit something to you,” Leo mysteriously laughed. “When I explained that you would be killed in 1944, that was a lie. Although, as you are a double, you do not know in which attack you will die. Realistically, we might as well have saved your life.”
“That's correct,” intervened the chief. “Even the best sometimes have bad luck.”
They slowly entered the machine and sat comfortably to relax a little.
“Do you remember the problem with the energy?” Galfonino broke the silence. “It’s gone, the machine has been recharged.”
That should have been good news, but they all looked dull at the Italian, knowing they would still take in different directions. Suddenly, the drama prevailed, and only the music was missing in this otherwise romantic setting.
“We have to admit that we were more than great in the Wild West,” Capone laughed.
“Oh, believe me, there isn’t anyone greater than us,” Leo also smiled.
“Yes, although in practice, it seemed more like the Wild East. But I think enough people have died. I’m going to miss you guys, but it's time to go home before it is too late and we decide something else.”
“Hey chief, don’t you cry on me?” the Hitler double pushed him on the shoulder and, seeing that he was serious, added. “I know, I know, and I will miss you too.”
“And to think what kind of problems are waiting for us at home, I almost feel bad. Still, we are doing the right thing. Galfo, it is time...”
The four hugged for the last time and Capone pushed the button. They left their Hitler in Argentina with his old comrades. That was his wish. Ernak went back to the same day he had taken off on.
Goodbyes were quite heavy and heartbreaking, considering what type of people they were.
It came the time for the gangsters to teleport too. Galfonino had just started dialing the date and place when Leo interrupted him, “I was thinking,” Cassis slightly narrowed his eyes, patting the shoulder of the Italian gently with his left hand and continued, “at home, if I may call it that, only trouble is waiting for us, empty bank accounts, and if we don’t play our cards right, even prison. You on the other side, are the grandson of Al Capone, even wearing his family name, gangster blood flowing through your veins. As for me, as far as I remember I have always followed the path of the mafia…”
The Italian leaned back and stared at the dashboard, but instead of the buttons, he saw a dream come true. After a few seconds again leaned over it…
“Why the hell not! While we are in series... Hang on, I’m running the counter...”
